Each of Us

Portraits and personal narratives of Black lives in Montréal

No single story can define a life.

Each of Us is a developing photographic portrait series within The Ground Beneath Us: Black Cartographies of Montréal.

The project begins with Black identity, but does not presume that Blackness alone can explain a person’s life. Each individual carries different histories, relationships, languages, aspirations and experiences of the city.

Through photography and personal narratives, Each of Us explores the complexity of individual lives, allowing participants to speak about what matters to them, how they understand themselves, and the places and experiences that have shaped who they are.

Together, these encounters offer a way of approaching Black Montréal through its people, without reducing their lives to a single identity or collective story.

The Portraits

The photographic series is in development. Portraits and accompanying narratives will be published here as the work progresses, with participants’ agreement.
